CARAPAX A performative exploration of bodily memory, limitation and renewal. It draws on the artist’s autobiographical experience of a chronic inflammatory spinal condition that is gradually changing her range of movement. Through this process of discomfort and diminishing flexibility, she seeks an artistic response: How can we remain flexible when everything inside us is becoming rigid? Rigidity is the new normal. The world and society, which once seemed to be in constant motion, are also becoming strangely rigid on the surface, developing a new protective shell. Can we no longer afford to be so soft, or have we simply grown tired of moving within? Two qualities of movement confront one another: flexibility, evoking a plant that stretches and reaches out into space, and contraction, a sudden pulling back that comes as a shock and confines us within our own space. The less we move, the less capable of movement we become. Are we all undergoing a change of state, or is society more flexible, constantly evolving, while I grow increasingly rigid within my limited, ageing human body?

TEREZA LENEROVÁ is a Czech dancer and choreographer. She began dancing as a child, later joining the Valášek folk ensemble, and continued her studies at the Duncan Centre Conservatory in Prague. Lenerová graduated from the Theaterschool Amsterdam and later spent time in New York, where she gained further dance experience. She has worked with numerous choreographers in the Czech Republic and abroad.
