WHAT THE FOLK? The project is a creative response to the political situation in Slovakia, where artists and marginalized groups – women, queer people, open activists – are portrayed as “fools” or as “stealers of public funds”, which fuels division, fear and anger among people.
Our aim is to counter this development by emphasising community, inclusion and interconnections. We explore the possible ways of reprising folk music and dance – traditionally associated with celebrations and rituals – through contemporary bodies and voices. Can folk traditions inspire a sense of belonging and connection in today’s society?
