We will present a total of 25 ensembles from France, Hungary, Germany, Norway, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic
25 ensembles from France, Hungary, Germany, Norway, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. Nearly 40 performances and other events... all this will be presented at the 33rd edition of our festival, which will take place from September 10 to 18 in Pilsen.
Shortly after its July premiere at the Festival d'Avignon, the latest production by Portuguese playwright, director, and director of the Avignon Festival Tiago Rodrigues, Distance, will arrive in the West Bohemian metropolis. The production, set on Earth and Mars in 2077, was co-produced by the Pilsen festival. The German Berliner Ensemble will bring a rarely performed production by Bertolt Brecht set in the meat industry in Germany in the late 1930s, Saint Joan of the Stockyards, directed by Dušan D. Pařízek. The Budapest-based Proton theatre company, led by world-renowned director Kornél Mundruczó, is not performing in Hungary due to a lack of state support and is struggling to survive. Their only chance is abroad. They will bring their production Parallax to Pilsen, as well as to other prestigious European festivals. It is an intimate story about the complexity of Jewish identity across three generations of a Hungarian family. A traditional guest of the festival, the Slovak National Theatre, will conclude the main part of the festival with the production Tatarka by director Dávid Paška, based on the literary work of Slovak writer and journalist Dominik Tatarka.
The domestic program traditionally offers visitors the chance to see a selection of new, exceptional productions from the past season in Brno, Liberec, Ostrava, Pilsen, Prague, Uherské Hradiště, and Ústí nad Labem, all in one place over five days.
The festival program also includes alternative performances in the Johan Presents section at Moving Station, debates, student workshops, and an exhibition.
